How to Wash a Weighted Blanket Without Ruining It
Weighted blankets aren't ordinary bedding. Before washing one, check three things: the care label, the blanket's total weight, and the washer's capacity.

Weighted blankets are not ordinary bedding.
Their extra weight usually comes from materials such as glass beads, plastic pellets, or other filling sewn into pockets throughout the blanket.
That construction can make cleaning more complicated.
Before putting a weighted blanket into any washing machine, check three things:
- The care label
- The blanket's total weight
- The washer's capacity
Start with the manufacturer's care instructions
This is the most important rule.
Different weighted blankets can have completely different cleaning requirements.
The care label may tell you to machine wash, hand wash, spot clean only, remove the cover first, air dry, tumble dry on low, or dry clean.
Do not assume that advice for one weighted blanket applies to another.
Remove the washable cover if there is one
Many weighted blankets use a removable duvet-style cover.
If the cover is the only part that is dirty, washing it separately is much easier than washing the weighted insert.
This can also extend the time between full cleanings. Follow the cover's own care instructions.
Know how much your blanket weighs
Weighted blankets commonly weigh much more than normal comforters.
That weight increases further when the blanket is saturated with water.
A washer must be able to handle the load safely.
Do not force a heavy blanket into a small residential washer. Even if it physically fits, the wet weight may exceed what the machine was designed to handle.
Why a commercial washer may be useful
A laundromat can offer larger-capacity machines than most homes.
That does not automatically mean every weighted blanket is machine washable, but it can provide a better option when the care label permits machine washing and the blanket is too heavy for your home equipment.
Ask an attendant for help choosing an appropriate machine.
Consider the filling material
The inside of the blanket matters.
Common fillings may react differently to heat, agitation, water, and detergent.
Some weighted blankets contain materials that should not be exposed to high dryer heat.
Again, the manufacturer's instructions should control the cleaning method.
Use a gentle approach when permitted
If the label allows machine washing, avoid making the process harsher than necessary.
Depending on the instructions, that may mean cold or cool water, gentle cycle, appropriate detergent amount, no bleach, and low heat or air drying.
Do not add cleaning products that the care label warns against.
Drying can be the hardest part
A wet weighted blanket can take a long time to dry.
Before using it again, it must be fully dry throughout.
Moisture trapped inside quilted sections can create odor or other problems.
If tumble drying is permitted, follow the heat recommendation carefully. If the label requires air drying, be prepared for the blanket to take much longer than ordinary bedding.
When you should not wash it yourself
Consider professional help when the label says dry clean only, the blanket exceeds your machine's capacity, the blanket is expensive or delicate, stitching is damaged, you are unsure what the filling is, or there are stains requiring special treatment.
It is better to ask first than damage a blanket that is costly to replace.
